FAQs
What does it mean that you’re a fiduciary?
It means we are legally and ethically required to act in your best interest at all times — not ours. As CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals, we are held to the fiduciary standard, which is the highest standard of care in financial services. You can trust that our recommendations are based on what’s right for you, not on what earns us a commission.
What is a CFP® and why does it matter?
The CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®) designation is the most recognized and respected credential in the financial planning industry. Earning it requires extensive education, thousands of hours of practical experience, a rigorous board exam, and an ongoing commitment to ethics and continuing education. When you work with a CFP® professional, you’re working with someone who has demonstrated mastery of financial planning from investments and taxes to retirement and estate planning.
Who do you typically work with?
We primarily serve individual and family clients in Addison County and across Vermont, as well as clients who have relocated but want to maintain a trusted, long-term planning relationship. Many of our clients are working professionals and retirees in the “middle market” — people who have worked hard, built meaningful assets, and want a trusted advisor to help them make the most of what they’ve built.
How is Landmark different from a bank or a big brokerage firm?
We’re an independent, locally rooted firm — which means we’re not tied to any product line or corporate quota. You get objective advice, genuine personal relationships, and a team that actually knows your name. At a big firm, you might see a different face every few years. At Landmark, you’ll work with the same team meeting after meeting, year after year. We think of our clients as family, and our meetings feel more like catching up with a trusted friend than sitting across a desk from a stranger in a suit.
What does the financial planning process look like?
It starts with a conversation — no sales pitch, no pressure. We want to understand where you are, where you want to go, and what’s standing in the way. From there, we develop a written financial plan that maps your path forward, and we meet regularly to review your progress and adjust as life changes. Think of us as your financial GPS: always recalculating, always oriented toward your destination.
How do you charge for your services?
We believe in transparency. Our fee structure is straightforward, and we’ll always explain exactly how we’re compensated before we begin working together. Depending on the type of planning and services involved, we may work on a fee-for-service, assets-under-management, commission, or combined basis. We’re happy to walk you through this during your first meeting.
Do I need a certain amount of money to work with you?
We work with clients across a range of financial situations. What matters more to us than the size of a portfolio is whether we’re a good fit for each other — and whether we can genuinely help you move forward. If you’re unsure, reach out. The first conversation is always on us.
What if I already have a 401(k) or IRA from a former employer?
That’s a great question, and one we hear often. Leaving assets scattered across old employer plans can mean higher fees, less control, and no coordinated strategy. We can help you evaluate your options — whether to leave assets where they are, consolidate them, or roll them into an IRA — and build a plan that puts everything to work together.
I’m just starting to think about retirement. Is it too early to meet with you?
It’s never too early — in fact, the earlier we can help you chart your course, the more options you’ll have when you get there. Whether retirement is 30 years away or 3, the right time to start planning is now. We’ll meet you wherever you are on the journey.
